Virginia's Late Rally Falls Short, #4 Cavs Upset by Radford 9-8

Posted: Updated:

The #4 UVa baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the rally fell short, as the 'Hoos lost 9-8 against Radford Wednesday at Davenport Field.

Radford scored all nine of its runs in the first two innings to build an early 9-1 lead.

Head coach Brian O' Connor says, "What I'm really proud of is our fight. We don't go away. Our guys don't pack it in, even when we're behind. They keep fighting, knowing that there's another opportunity. We had an opportunity in the 9th inning. It's unfortunate the 1st two innings are what cost us the ballgame."

Virginia freshman pitcher Trey Oest got the loss while giving up six earned runs.

The Cavaliers Mike Papi and Derek Fisher both hit home runs in the loss.

Fisher says, "Obviously trying to get five runs back in the 9th is going to be tough, especially against a team like Radford. We fight back. There's no question about that. It's a full team effort."

The defeat snaps Virginia's five game win streak.

The 'Hoos fall to 30-4, while Radford improves to 20-11.

Virginia begins a 3-game series at Georgia Tech Friday.
