UPDATE: 2 Dead After Rt. 29 Crash

UPDATE: According to Albemarle County Police, the driver - Jeannette Smith, 88 - has died Tuesday April 16 as a result of her injuries from the crash.

One person is dead and another is in critical condition after a crash Wednesday afternoon in Albemarle County.

The wreck happened about 1 p.m., just past Hollymead Town Center on Route 29. Police say the car was headed south when it ran off the road and hit a tree.

Gerard Joseph Smith, 87, died at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He was a passenger in the car.

The 88-year-old female driver remains in critical condition Wednesday night.

The Albemarle County Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on
Wednesday, April 10th 2013.

The single vehicle crash occurred at 1:02 pm just south of Town Center Boulevard on Seminole Trail.
The 2002 Buick Lesabre ran off the left side of the road, striking a tree in the median. At this time, the
cause of the crash remains under investigation. Both passengers were wearing their seatbelts.

The 88 year old female driver was taken to UVA Medical Center and remains in critical condition. The
87 year old male passenger, Gerard Joseph Smith, was taken to UVA and later died from his injuries.
Both were from Albemarle County.

This is the fourth fatal crash this year in Albemarle County. There were 12 fatal crashes in 2012.
