Public Hearing to Take Place on Proposed Budget in Madison

Posted: Updated:

People in Madison County will have a chance to sound off on the county's proposed budget Tuesday night.  Right now it sits at more than $34 million for the next fiscal year.

Madison County's Administrator Ernie Hoch says they've been aggressive about saving money - but are faced with necessary increases in order to balance the budget.

Madison County Public Schools are looking to add more than $500,000 to their budget - but people will only see about a $90,000 increase in county funds. That's because the schools have agreed to try and save money in their budget this year – and the Board of Supervisors has allowed the schools to roll those savings to help fund their budget next year.

"What we've tried to do is have enough savings so it will offset some of the increases and have a net reduction if possible, but at least balance the budget so that we don't have to keep asking for additional increases for residents," said Hoch.

The Board of Supervisors is slated to vote on a one cent increase in the county' tax rate Tuesday. Hoch says, at the end of the day, it is possible to balance the budget without raising taxes.

The public hearing will start at 7 p.m. at the County Administration Center. Officials say increased funds for law enforcement and the Comprehensive Services Act will likely spark discussion.
