Free Cone Day Benefits Virginia Institute of Autism

Posted: Updated:

In Charlottesville on Tuesday, you can get a sweet treat for a cause at a price you simply can't beat.

Ben and Jerry's "Free Cone Day" benefits the Virginia Institute of Autism (VIA). Volunteers are busy scooping ice cream for customers of all ages at the store in Charlottesville's Barracks Road Shopping Center.

Organizers say it is important to keep spreading the word about autism.

"The rate of diagnosis continues to increase. Last year the CDC reported one in 88 kids. Last month, they released a new report that said parents are saying that one in 50 kids are receiving a diagnosis. So it's really affecting a lot of families," said Charlotte Moore, director of development and communications for VIA.

The event usually raises $5,000 for the nonprofit. You can get a free cone until 8 p.m.
