An Augusta County man convicted of setting fire to a church has failed in his bid for a new trial. A jury found Paul Lenwill Cupp guilty of arson.
Tuesday, a judge granted Cupp's request to hire a new attorney who will represent him at sentencing in June.
Cupp was arrested soon after a small fire damaged the Hildebrand Mennonite Church in October 2011.
The defense claimed that prosecutors used surprise testimony from a key witness, but the judge dismissed their motion to set aside the verdict.
