Health Authorities Release Community Health Improvement Plan

Posted: Updated:

Tuesday, health leaders in the Charlottesville area are unveiling a new road map to a healthier community.

This is the culmination of about a year and a half of work by a group of 60 different organizations in the central Virginia. The "MAPP" report, released Tuesday, highlights four areas the community needs to address to improve overall health.

Those include better access to mental health resources, improving pregnancy outcomes and prenatal care, and doing more to curb tobacco use – but the number one issue plaguing the region is the obesity epidemic.

Health experts want people to be aware of the new data, and take their health into their own hands.

"As an individual, if you can commit to moving more, to improving your diet, and hopefully we can really see that affect obesity rates," said Dr. Lilian Peake, Thomas Jefferson Health District Director.

The report does outline a number of very positive health trends in the Charlottesville area, thanks in large part to access to top notch healthcare and other resources.

But health leaders say they will continue working together to advance their collective goals of a healthier community. To read the full report, click here.
