Albemarle Public Schools Spending Less Per Student Than Nearby Divisions

Posted: Updated:

Albemarle County Public Schools reports that they are spending less money per student than surrounding school systems.

Albemarle currently spends around $11,700 per student compared to Charlottesville city and local private schools, who spend around $17,000 and $22,000 per student respectively.

The county says, while students are still getting a quality education, it has been tough to offer certain programs.

"We'd like to be able to have a world languages program at the elementary school level. We want to put more technology in the hands of our students, we've made great strides, but when you look at the city, for example, they do have a one-to-one initiative, a device for every student. We're starting to put plans together to do that in the next couple of years for our secondary students," said Josh Davis, chief operating officer.

The school system says it is seeing more growth as it comes out of the recession, and hopes to have a balanced budget by April 30.
