Charlottesville Organizations Dedicate First Pair of Homes

Two Charlottesville families now have something they've always wanted - the keys to their own homes.

The first affordable homes built in a partnership between the Thomas Jefferson Community Land Trust and Habitat for Humanity were dedicated to their homeowners Sunday afternoon.

The Cox and the Sugwigano families met the volunteers and donors who helped them become homeowners during Sunday's open house.

"I heard someone say that what they were looking forward to was decorating and I thought, 'Oh give me a break,' and as soon as we got this house looking like this all I could think was 'I got to get decorating,' so it's something that you know, maybe it's an instinct that we want to have our own home and make it our own," new homeowner Iris Cox said.

Habitat and the Land Trust are also helping these families learn skills for responsible home ownership.

These first families will move-in in about a month.
