Former UVa Baseball Star Jarrett Parker Returns Home, Joins Double-A Richmond

Posted: Updated:

Former UVa baseball standout Jarrett Parker will start this pro baseball season with the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.

Parker played at UVa from 2008-2010.  His best season was his sophomore year when he batted .355 with 16 home runs.   Parker was selected by the Giants in 2010 in the second round of the MLB draft.

Parker as spent the last two years playing for the Giants single-A affiliate in San Jose.   He batted .253 in 2011 with 13 home runs and 144 strikeouts.   Last year in San Jose, Parker's average dipped slightly at .247 and his strikeouts increased to 175.    He still managed 15 home runs.

This year is considered a make-or-break season for Parker.  The Stafford native is glad to get that chance in his home state.

Parker says, "Its really tough being in California and not really knowing anybody and being on my own, it's a tough adjustment and I can't tell you how excited I am to be back home. I saw my parents last night and I'm just lucky to be able to experience this."

Richmond manager, Dave Machemer says, "He has a lot of tools, we're still refining his swing. Kenny Joyce has done a great job in kind of tweaking his swing a little bit, we're really please with the way he played the outfield so we're looking for a good year from him."
