Fluvanna Supervisors Approve Park & Ride Plan

Posted: Updated:

Commuters who drive from Fluvanna County to Charlottesville could soon have a place to meet and make the trip together.

Wednesday afternoon, county supervisors approved plans for a deal to open a Park & Ride on private property. The lot would give more than 2,200 people living in Lake Monticello - but working in and around Charlottesville - a place to start and end their carpool commute.

Goodwill's move from a drop-off shed to a stand-alone store is sharing some good will with Lake Monticello commuters.

"It's going to be quite a busy area," said Steven Nichols, Fluvanna County administrator.

Fluvanna County is ready to ink a deal with the Jefferson Centre's owner to allow a Park & Ride lot for drivers sharing the road.

"That will just be a really good source to be able to leave a car in a very centrally located, convenient location for a lot of homes in Lake Monticello and other areas," said Nichols.

The parking lot is located just outside the gate at Lake Monticello. The county plans to put up signs and launch a marketing campaign to encourage commuters from the lake to use the 50 or so spaces to park for carpooling to Richmond or Charlottesville.

Census numbers show nearly 60 percent of people who live at Lake Monticello work in Charlottesville or Albemarle County.

"That is a lot of people commuting - mostly down Route 53," said Lisa Horanyi of RideShare.

Horanyi hopes these spaces fill with carpooling commuters.

"People see the sign for a Park & Ride - they become more aware of their options," said Horanyi.

Placing the Park & Ride on shopping center property could also bring a boost to businesses - from road-weary commuters looking for services close to home.

"When people are sharing the ride to and from work, they're not staying in Charlottesville or wherever they may work for their shopping needs. They're returning back to that Park & Ride lot," said Horanyi.

RideShare has been trying to find space for a Park & Ride near the lake for years.

Now that supervisors approved the plan, the county can hammer out a contract with the Jefferson Centre's owner.
