Albemarle Volunteer Fire Crews Fighting 15-Year-Old Policy

Posted: Updated:

Albemarle volunteer fire crews are fighting a policy battle. Currently paid and career firefighters in the county are not allowed to volunteer with any of the unpaid volunteer fire departments.

The volunteer groups are trying to change the 15-year-old policy, saying they are losing too many qualified people.

"We lose volunteers - we have to pay more people, which takes money out of taxpayer's pockets and it hurts volunteer units because we spend a lot of time training these volunteers," said Rodney Rich, president of the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department.

The volunteer companies say the county's recent EMS system switch is not helping at this point.

The county is hiring new paid firefighters to staff a new fire station in the Ivy area.
