Verona, Riverheads and Cassell elementary schools are Augusta County's three remaining pod schools. Some changes this week should make those schools a little safer.
A pod school is a campus of separate buildings, which makes security more challenging.
Augusta County Schools have changed all the locks, they're using walkie-talkies to communicate between the pods, the buddy system ensures students are never alone and all parents are expected to sign in at the office.
"We're doing this for the safety of everybody. We're not making any assumptions that anybody is going to do anything wrong, but we owe it to our students and staff to have a degree of safety in place that is appropriate," said Chuck Bishop, Augusta Schools superintendent.
Bishop says they are also improving signage so the buildings are easily identified in emergencies.
