UVA Lacrosse Presses Forward After Rocky Start

Posted: Updated:

The 17th ranked Virginia men's lacrosse team proves game-in and game-out that they can hang with the best - but they've dropped 5 heartbreakers to top-ten opponents.

In the final minutes of UVA's game against #2 Maryland, Virginia trailed by four.

When most teams would lose hope - the Cavaliers forced turnovers, picked up ground balls and fought until the final whistle.

"At the end of today's game nobody gave up...You know some other teams down by four - two minutes left, would kind of be like, oh you know, and we didn't - we came back," said Attacker Nick O'Reilly.

Head Coach Dom Starsia added, "everybody was getting after it in that last ten minutes and that's what you need."

A lot of the guys are crediting these tough breaks to not coming out as fired up as they finish.

Scott McWilliams said, "We're starting out a little bit flat but we just gotta bring out that energy right from the gate."

Starsia has 4 national championships under his belt at Virginia - and he's the first to point out the character of his team. "This is as good as a team as I've had on the practice field... I've really enjoyed every minute of being with this team you know - but this is what we show the public on game day. We're not getting the results we'd like to see," said Starsia.

O'Reilly added, "You'd rather win than lose... but everyone's still together and no one's pointing fingers. We all know that its a group effort and its not one particular thing so we all know that we all have to get a little bit better and in practice.

As they gear up for North Carolina and Duke in the coming weeks - they're only focus is to improve and push forward.

Starsia said, "keep them positive so that we can keep getting better - the seasons not over. We can still do some damage here and if we can keep getting better we can make some good moments for ourselves."
