Number of Mumps Cases on the Rise

Posted: Updated:

The commonwealth is seeing an increase in cases of the mumps this year.

Forty-five cases have been documented in Virginia since the beginning of the new year. Last year at this time, only seven cases had been reported.

Patients suffering from the mumps can show symptoms including tiredness, weakness, fever, headache, and an infection of the salivary glands. Doctors say the acute viral infection is easy to prevent.

"The number one thing would be immunization and if you're an adult that doesn't have documented immunizations to it, that would be the first step," said Dr. Anil Shukla of the Martha Jefferson Hospital. "The second step would be knowing the signs and symptoms like we talked about and if you're ever concerned obviously talking to your doctor about it."

The disease is rare because of high levels of immunization against the mumps. The recent cases have been discovered mostly in Richmond on college campuses.
