American Indian Culture Day Festival at PVCC

Posted: Updated:

Native American culture took center stage Saturday at Piedmont Virginia Community College.

A performance by the Red Crooked Dance Troupe, a group of Native Americans from several tribes, kicked off the show at American Indian Culture Day.

Native American vendors sold baskets, jewelry and traditional fry bread made from a secret tribe recipe.

Organizer Emily Gillispie says she hopes the day was enlightening for everyone.

"As long as you learn something - it doesn't matter what it is - it's extremely important," Gillispie said. "They can learn different things about the language, the way it's being preserved, the dancing, everything else."

Gillispie is a senior at the Renaissance School in Charlottesville. This Native American culture day was part of her senior project on cultural preservation.
