City of Waynesboro
On March 27, 2013 at approximately 8:00 AM, a Waynesboro resident in the 600 block of Meadowview Cove contacted the Waynesboro Police Department Animal Control officer. The resident claimed that she heard a commotion from her backyard and when she looked out, she observed her two dogs fighting with a fox. The resident stated that she was unable to get her dogs to return to the house. A Patrol officer assisted in humanely euthanizing the injured fox and the carcass was subsequently transferred to the Health Department for evaluation.
On March 29, Animal Control was contacted by the Health Department and the remains were confirmed to have tested positive for rabies. Although somewhat rare, the Waynesboro Police Department Animal Control officer urges all citizens to monitor their animals closely while they are outdoors. As always, domestic and wild animals should not be approached by citizens. Records show that this is the third incident involving a wild animal with rabies in the past 10 years.
