APPOMATTOX, Va. (AP) - An Appomattox church has unveiled a bell dedicated to the eight victims murdered in the community in January 2010.
The bell at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church sounded for the first time Thursday night.
It honors the memory of Dwayne and Lauralee Sipe, their son Joshua and Lauralee Sipe's daughter Morgan Dobyns; Jonathan and Karen Quarles and their daughter Emily; and Bo Scruggs, 1 of Emily's friends. They were gunned down in the mass shooting for which 42-year-old Christopher Speight was sentenced to multiple life terms last month.
The News & Advance reports that none of the victims or their immediate families were members of the church, but parishioners wanted to honor their memories.
The bell also is a memorial to the victims of other mass shootings.
