Candidates for Charlottesville Treasurer Speak at Forum

Posted: Updated:

A special election is set for Tuesday to fill the open seat for Charlottesville's treasurer.

The two candidates in the running came out to a forum Thursday night, hosted by the Jefferson Area Tea Party, to give people a chance to get to know them better.

The last special election in Charlottesville was in 2001. Now, two candidates are vying for the position of Charlottesville treasurer. This comes after longtime treasurer Jennifer Brown retired last October.

Democrat Jason Vandever, who is currently serving as interim treasurer, threw his hat in the race. He says he takes pride in holding the position.

"It is important, this office is important as a constitutional officer the treasurers report directly to citizens and this is the opportunity for citizens that really makes a difference," Vandever said.

The Charlottesville native says having worked in the treasurer's office is crucial.

"I think I bring to the table my experience and my knowledge of the office and what the office does and really be able to hit the ground running with the things I want to do," Vandever said.

John Pfaltz, a retired University of Virginia professor, has also put his name in the race. The independent says the position could be a burden but it's important for him to run.

"It cuts into my retirement. It's going to be a nuisance but I will do a good job if I'm elected. I'm committed to doing the best possible job I can and it's important for the city," Pfaltz said.

Pfaltz says keeping people informed will be one of his main goals.

"I can afford to let people know what's going on; I can make transparency happen," Pfaltz said.

The special election takes place next Tuesday, April 2.
