National Geographic Traveling Map of Africa at Carver Recreation Center

Some Charlottesville second graders are headed to Africa without even having a plane ticket - thanks to a special map.

The National Geographic traveling map is giving students the chance to learn about geography through hands on activities.

Kids use special games to learn about the continent's features - including the climate and animals unique to that environment.

"Every book that a kid reads has a setting, it takes place somewhere and so geography is just as much a part a literature as it is a part of history, as it is a part of economics, and so I feel like geography is the bridge to all the other content areas," said Annie Evans, K-12 social studies coordinator for Charlottesville schools.

The giant map is at the Carver Recreation Center inside the Jefferson School.
