Fluvanna Superintendent Presents Amended Budget to School Board

Posted: Updated:

There was some good news for school staff Wednesday night in Fluvanna County.   Fluvanna County Schools Superintendent Gena Keller presented an amended budget to the school board that has more cuts but it does not call for any additional positions to be eliminated.

Last week the Board of Supervisors did not fully fund Keller's $14.1 million request. Supervisors instead proposed a tax rate hike that would bring funding to $13.7 million, leaving schools to fill a $400,000 gap. Now, an amended budget calls for cuts, but leaves staff positions untouched.

"I am really pleased that they were able to make it work and not take anything else away from the staff because we just couldn't deal with anymore frankly," said teacher Jennifer Flood.

The budget does, however, only allow $50 per student for instructional funds.

"It's not devastating but it's still a little tough to wrestle with when we've been in a place where we've had $100 and $150 per student," Keller said.

Though perhaps not devastating, teachers say it will affect the students.

"The kids learn it best when they can get hands-on experiences and right now there's no money for the supplies that I need for those types of experiments," Flood said.

The budget will also not allow health insurance benefits to get better.

"I believe one of the weakest points in our budget is going to be health insurance," Keller said.

Technology needs were also cut from $307,000 to just $82,000.

Keller says, even though the cuts are difficult, they are one step closer to having a sustainable budget.

"Each year it gets better and that's what we want to see," she said.

There will be a public hearing on this amended budget on April 10. The county's proposed tax rate is expected to be approved on April 17.
