VDOT to Preserve Cemetery Found in Path of Rt. 29 Western Bypass

Posted: Updated:

The Virginia Department of Transportation will redesign part of Charlottesville's planned Western Bypass to preserve a historic African-American family cemetery.

The Sammons family cemetery was found - in the direct path of the bypass - during preliminary stages of construction in January.

Lou Hatter, VDOT spokesperson for the Culpeper District, says they're making this change out of respect for the Sammons family. No specific realignment designs are available yet.

VDOT says the cemetery will be preserved intact within the right of way and outside the construction limits and that they will provide access to the site - for the family - after the roadwork is done.
