Public Hearing Held on Tonsler Park Changes

Posted: Updated:

One of Charlottesville's parks is another step closer to getting a makeover.

Tuesday night the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the public took a look at some of the possible changes to Tonsler Park.

The draft master plan for the park was presented, and that plan calls for some major renovations.

Parks and recreation developed it after working with park users and those in surrounding neighborhoods.

Some changes include a renovation of the basketball courts and a walking trail around the park. A field house to provide space for indoor activities that now take place inside the community center is also part of the plan.

Only a couple of people spoke out during the public hearing, mostly with timeline questions. Planners say it's time for some changes to the park.

"It's been almost 20 years since Tonsler got a major facelift, which included the construction of this building, so a new generation of people are around with different interests and we're upgrading the park for those needs," said park and trail planner Chris Gensic.

Planners say they want a park for people of all ages.

The advisory board is scheduled to approve the plan at its next meeting. From there it will go to the planning commission and then on to City Council in August.
