Charlottesville Director Makes Documentary about Navy SEAL

Posted: Updated:

Some moviemakers from Charlottesville are behind a documentary playing in 180 theaters across the country.

Scott Mactavish directed "Murph - the Protector," a movie about the life and death of fallen Navy SEAL Michael Murphy from the eyes of his friends and family.

Murphy died on a secret mission in Afghanistan in 2005. He was awarded a Medal of Honor after his death.

"That level of sacrifice, when you hear that, you really feel like you get to know this character and I don't personally know very many heroes and none that have won the Medal of Honor. So seeing the movie, you get the feeling of I met this guy, I know who he is and at that point, what he did begins to have an impact on you," Director of Photography Todd Free said.

Mactavish asked Free to help film and edit the documentary. The two men met in Charlottesville almost 10 years ago.

"Murph - the Protector" is on limited release in select Regal Cinema theaters across the country, including the Regal 6 on the downtown mall. It only runs until Thursday.

Part of the proceeds will go to benefit a scholarship fund in Murphy's name.
