Posted: Updated:

A student at Piedmont Virginia Community College is receiving statewide recognition this week.

Anastasiya Hvaleva is Virginia's 2013 New Century Scholar, after receiving the state's highest USA Academic Team application score.

A native of Kyrgyzstan, she is studying business administration in hopes of pursuing a career in environmental technology.

"I really work hard. And I think it's not even recognition for myself, it's the huge recognition for the college," said Hvaleva.

Hvaleva receives a $2,000 scholarship, and will travel to California this month to receive her award.  She graduates from PVCC in May, and plans to attend UVA's McIntire School of Commerce in the fall.

Charlottesville, Va. – A student at Piedmont Virginia Community College has been named the top community college student in Virginia. The award is part of the All-USA Academic Team program sponsored by USA TODAY, the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the national honor society for two-year colleges.

Charlottesville resident Anastasiya Hvaleva was named the 2013 New Century Scholar for Virginia. The program honors students who receive the highest All-USA Academic Team application score in each state. Hvaleva is the sixth PVCC student to be named Virginia New Century Scholar since the award program began in 2000.

As a New Century Scholar, Hvaleva received a $2,000 scholarship from the Coca-Cola Foundation and Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. She will attend the AACC Conference with PVCC President Frank Friedman in San Jose, Calif., later this month to receive her award.

Hvaleva emigrated to the U.S. in 2005 when a destabilizing revolution unfolded in her home country of Kyrgyzstan. She immediately began intensive ESL classes at Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania.

Now Hvaleva is a student in the business administration program at PVCC and president of the College's chapter of PTK. She is also president of the PVCC International Club and Business Club. She was named to PVCC's fall 2012 President's List and is a tutor in the College's Learning Center.

Hvaleva will graduate in May with an Associate of Science degree from PVCC and plans to attend the University of Virginia McIntire School of Business in the fall. She hopes to pursue a career in environmental technology.

The Coca-Cola All-State Community College Academic Team and the New Century Scholar programs recognize outstanding two-year college students based on nominations submitted by community college presidents or CEOs. Awards are based in part on student's academic excellence, leadership qualities and service to their community.
