#11 UVA Baseball Sweeps Series Against #16 NC State
The #11 UVA baseball team beat the weather and the Wolfpack Sunday, as the 'Hoos won 6-3 to sweep #16 North Carolina State for the first time in program history.
Game Three was originally set to be played Monday night at 7 pm at Davenport Field, but was moved to Sunday at 11 am to avoid the incoming foul weather.
Head coach Brian O'Connor says, "Certainly this weekend, I think our guys showed something with winning all three games, and showed we can sweep a high quality opponent here at home."
Senior Reed Gragnani says, "Coach prepared us well today, with the weather, and everything that was coming in. We really needed to get after them, and it was a big, big series sweep for us."
Sophomore Nick Howard got the start on the mound for UVA, and pitched 4 1/3 innings while giving up two runs.
Howard went 3-for-4 at the plate, with an RBI, and two runs scored.
The young Cavaliers improve to 22-2 overall with the win.
"We had a lot of guys that the media didn't really know about," says Howard. "We wanted to go out there and prove, and we still are proving to ourselves that we're a great ball club, and we're starting to realize our potential."
O'Connor adds, "I really, really believe that this team still has some steps forward that we have to take. It's hard to sit here and say that when you're 22-2, but there is. There is still more out there."
NC State jumped out to a 2-0 lead Sunday with runs in the 1st and 4th inning, but UVA went in front with three runs in the bottom of the 4th, and scored three more times in the 6th.
Austin Young improved to 2-0, after picking up the win with 2/3 of an inning pitched.
UVA (22-2, 7-2 ACC) will be back in action Wednesday, as they host Towson at 7 pm.
