Greene County Parks and Rec Hosts Streetball Fundraiser

Posted: Updated: March 24, 2013 08:21 PM EDT

Some special guests showed off their streetball skills Sunday night to raise funds for the Greene County Community Park.

Players from several states came out to try and make money to build new basketball courts there. Greene County Parks and Recreation hosted a youth basketball clinic to raise funds for the $30,000 project.

Players, like Patrick Robinson, hit the courts for the cause.

"I'm known as the world's greatest dribbler," he said.

Robinson goes by the nickname "Pat the Roc" when he plays with the New York City Streetball Ballers. The team travels around the country to show off on the court.

"Basically any streetball player is known for a special skill whether it's dribbling dunking or all-around game and streetball is just unlimited creativity with a basketball," he said.

Sunday afternoon, the team stopped at William Monroe High School for a fundraising event. Two streetball ballers worked with a handful of young players on basics like shooting and dribbling. Money from the clinic will be put towards building basketball courts at the county's community park.

"When the school did renovation here at the high school, the kids lost their basketball courts and part of the master plan of the community park is to get outdoor basketball courts there," said Julius Bates, the director of Parks and Recreation for Greene County.

It's a plan Robinson is happy to play a part in.

"A majority of my time is travel all around the world and help kids because when I look into the audiences at these clinics, I don't see unfamiliar faces, I see Pat The Roc, I see myself, because I was that same kid coming to clinics on Saturdays and Sundays trying to improve, trying to be the best basketball player I could be," he said.

A game between the New York City Streetball Ballers and a team of players from Greene and surrounding counties was also scheduled Sunday night to benefit the cause.  That game was postponed because of weather conditions.
