Albemarle County Sheriff Chip Harding says more needs to be done to bolster DNA databases for law enforcement.
Harding will deliver an address at 6:30 Friday night at the Good News Jail and Prison Ministry spring banquet. He'll explain the importance of DNA technology, and how it has changed the face of modern policing by catching more criminals and exonerating the innocent.
"There are many things we can do in our own justice system to lessen the probability of getting somebody wrongly convicted," Harding said.
Harding wants to push statewide to add misdemeanor criminals to DNA databases. He says that will help identify serial offenders earlier.
He also wants the state to explore an "innocence commission" to help prevent and correct wrongful convictions.
