Spring is officially here and for some people, that means it's time to start gardening and raising baby animals.
Right now 1,000 baby chickens are up for grabs at Southern States. Representatives from the store say raising your own chickens is the latest trend. In the last two years the store has doubled its chick sales.
The baby hens are a cross between a White Rock chicken and a Rhode Island Red. They just hatched, but in six months they'll start laying their own eggs. Then they should lay an egg a day for a year and a half to two years.
Store representatives say the number of people raising their own chicks is booming.
"We have a lot of people interested in raising their own food and knowing where it comes from. Chicks have been real popular and then the home gardens have been making a big comeback so we ordered a thousand chicks," said Donnie Toms with Southern States.
Toms says the chicks don't require a lot of maintenance. But, if you're thinking of starting a flock of your own little hens, keep in mind you'll need to protect them from predators like foxes, raccoons and hawks with protective housing like a wired run.
If you buy one bag of feed, you get six chicks free.
And next Tuesday, Southern States is having a talk on how to raise those chickens at 1 p.m. at the store on Proffit Road in Charlottesville.
