Just one Virginia school is among the finalists for a performing arts grant from the NBC show "Smash."
Montevideo Middle School in Rockingham County dates back to the 1950s. Its entire auditorium was recently renovated – except for the stage floor.
Montevideo hopes for a grant from the "Make a Musical" contest to make needed repairs to the performance space. And the problems are not just cosmetic.
"It's got gouges and cuts and scrapes and marks and imperfections that need to be fixed," said Montevideo drama teacher John Knauf. "I have to caution students not to be barefoot on the stage, because they could potentially pick up splinters or injuries from it."
Montevideo is among 30 finalists for a $3,000 grant that is awarded to the top five in online voting.
