The UVa men's basketball team will face Norfolk State tonight at 9pm in the first round of the NIT. Virginia The Cavaliers have won 17 straight games at John Paul Jones Arena.
Virginia is a 1-seed. Norfolk State is an 8-seed. Both teams have records of 21-11.
The Spartans went 16-0 in the MEAC earning an automatic bid into the NIT. Norfolk St. was upset in its conference tournament, but is now excited to get a shot at playing UVa.
Norfolk State junior guard Pendarvis Williams says, "Its very exciting to play against some good competition that's coming out of the ACC. First thing I thought about was freshman year when they beat us on a free-throw tip-in, so I'm thinking revenge."
Norfolk State head coach Anthony Williams talking about Virginia says, "Methodical basketball team, they shoot the ball really well from the perimeter. We're going to have to play great perimeter defense, rebound and try to disrupt them a little bit because they're so methodical and they run their offense well."
UVa coach Tony Bennett met with his players Sunday night after the team didn't get a bid to the NCAA Tournament. He says, "In our meeting I said we wanted a chance to be in the NCAA's we didn't make that chance so now lets be the best NIT team we can be. We acknowledge we didn't play our best basketball against NC State and in a couple of those games so lets try to finish this thing strong. Lets look at the opportunities in front of us, this is a good tournament and I think our guys are excited to play."
