Posted: Updated:

Thousands of dollars in scholarships honoring the late state Senator Emily Couric will help young women in central Virginia go to college.

Monday, Former Maine Senator Olympia Snowe spoke to the nearly 400 guests at the 13th Annual Emily Couric Leadership Luncheon held at the Omni Hotel in Charlottesville.

The Emily Couric Leadership Forum handed out $71,000 in scholarships to 10 female students from Albemarle and Charlottesville. St. Anne's Belfield senior Anjali Prahash received $30,000 as the Emily Couric Leadership Scholarship award winner.

"If you have a passion and it's in your heart, you can pursue it and it will become a reality for you. If anyone ever tries to discourage you, just have faith that there's a plan for you - up there. God has a plan for you and he'll make sure it comes to you," said Prahash.

Prahash hopes to empower women in India to become leaders - in honor of Emily Couric.

Monday's luncheon raised more than $125,000 for the leadership scholarship program.
