George Welsh Indoor Practice Facility Opens Just In Time For UVA Football

The Virginia Football team was eager to hit the turf on March 18, 2013 for their first spring practice.

UVA Center, Luke Bowonko said, "Ever since the whistle blew against Tech, guys have been itching to get back out here."

The 'Hoos were greeted with a winter surprise.

Head coach Mike London said, "It was crazy as I walked out of the locker room it was snowing."

Typically snow would damper their game plan but luckily the 80,000 square foot, 13 million dollar George Welsh Indoor Practice facility officially opened its doors on the same day.

Senior Offensive Tackle, Morgan Moses said, "Walking in here - having a full 100-yard field and not having to go outside and practice in the snow - It's definitely great.

"It was kind of ironic. First day of practice with the snowfall that we'd have to deal with the elements outside and have a chance to come in and have a full practice and just enjoy this facility," added London.

With the debut of the new facility, five new assistant coaches on the sidelines and 3 quarterbacks vying for the number one spot, UVA hopes to bring a new energy to the 2013 football season.

London said, "Play action pass. We'll put some read plays in there for the quarterbacks. Its not complicated but there are some variances to what we did last year."

"It kind of raises the expectations and people are more eager to perform," said Bowonko.

Red shirt quarterback David Watford is at the top of the Cavaliers depth chart and took the first rep at practice.

London said, "He's chomping at the bit to compete."

Watford added, "I'm working hard...They've rewarded me for working hard."

London made it clear that all positions are up for grabs until the Cavaliers opening snap against Brigham Young on August 31st.

"Guys are starting in spots right now that are definitely not the way they're going to end they all know that everyone's competing for a job out here. The quarterback situation is no different from the defensive backs or the running backs."
