UVA Will Face NC State In ACC Second Round

Posted: Updated:

NC State looked like the team which was picked to win the ACC this year in its first round game at the conference tournament Thursday.

The Wolfpack shot 53 percent from the field, and took control of the game with an 11-0 run in the second half, as they beat Virginia Tech 80-63.

Tech junior forward Cadarian Raines says, "We just played in spurts out there. NC State played a whole 40 minutes. They played good. They were executing out there well."

ACC Player of the Year Erick Green played through a knee injury, but missed 14 of 19 shots.

He finished with 15 points, and received hugs from his teammates as he left the game for the final time in a Hokie uniform.

"It hurt, walking off with a loss," says Green.  "I'm a winner. I've always been a winner. Headed in here, that's all I was looking forward to, was holding the trophy up, and ending my college career as ACC champion."

Tech's Jarrell Eddie finished with a team high 21 points, and the Hokies end the season with a record of 13-19.

For the second year in a row, Virginia will play NC State in the ACC tournament quarterfinals.

The Wolfpack beat the Cavaliers 67-64 in the second round last year.

UVA upset then 19th-ranked NC State 58-55 in their only meeting this season at John Paul Jones Arena.

Wolfpack junior forward C.J. Leslie says, "It's going to be a very physical game. Last game, I was sick, so I'm looking to play a whole lot better."

"It's gonna be a great game," adds senior forward Richard Howell.  "We got to go out there and make them play our game. We can't play their tempo, the slow-down, type of game. We want to get up and down the floor."

Senior forward Scott Wood adds, "They're a good defensive team, and they obviously got us at their place this year. We're going to have to bring our 'A' game and play well."

UVA and NC State will play Friday at 2pm in Greensboro.

All of the ACC tournament games can be seen on NBC 29.
