March 14 is the date and 3.14 is pi, or the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, so an Albemarle County private school decided to have a celebration.
Students at Afton Christian School celebrated Pi Day all day on Thursday.
A group of almost 60 students lined up outside displaying a small portion of the number. At lunch, students competed to solve different math equations using pi.
"Our goal is to motivate students to learn and so Pi Day seemed like a way to involve more than just a handful of students. We can do it for the whole student body," said Paige Brown, a teacher at Afton Christian School.
Students also enjoyed pie in food form. The school sprung for pizza and students brought in pies for dessert.
