The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors voted Wednesday night to bring Fifth Street Station one step closer to becoming reality. The board voted to approve the planned shopping center between Fifth and Avon streets.
The project has been at a standstill because of debates over protected land in that area. In order to make room for a connecting road, some areas of flood plain will need to be filled.
Now the project can move forward pending final approval from FEMA.
Wegmans grocery store has already confirmed it will be opening a location at the shopping center. Groundbreaking on the new shopping center could begin by the end of the year.
