Statement by Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo on the election of Pope Francis I
Today I join with my brother priests, religious and all the faithful of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond in expressing thanks to almighty God for the election of our new pontiff, Pope Francis I, the successor to St. Peter.
We Catholics in the Diocese of Richmond and around the world have been praying fervently for the Holy Spirit to guide the College of Cardinals with great wisdom and love in choosing our new pope, and our prayers have been answered!
Our Holy Father embarks on his papacy as a pope of firsts: he is the first pope to come from the Western Hemisphere, the first Jesuit, and, perhaps most telling, the first pope to choose the name of Francis, a beloved saint of our faith known for his humility and great love for the poor.
We look forward with eager expectation and great joy to his pontificate, and we assure him of our earnest and constant prayer!
