Woman Escapes Augusta House Fire, Dog Killed

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters say a woman helped her elderly grandmother escape from their burning home Tuesday morning.

The blaze broke out around 8:45 a.m. at 490 Eastside Highway in Dooms, about .5 miles from the nearest fire department.

"The initial crew from Dooms was first on the scene, reported heavy fire and flames from the house," said J.M. Armstrong, Augusta County's deputy fire and rescue chief. "The occupant had made it out of the house with the help of her granddaughter and a neighbor, so that was a big help to us," he said.

One small dog was killed in the fire.

Armstrong said the blaze appears to be accidental. He believes that a floor furnace may have ignited clothing next to it.

A total of five people live in the home, and firefighters are not sure whether the family will be able to return. The Red Cross is helping them with temporary housing.
