Buford Middle Debuts New Lab School

Posted: Updated:

Students at Buford Middle School launched a huge achievement for education Monday.  The Charlottesville school is the first in the nation to have a laboratory school for advanced manufacturing technologies.

Program coordinators say giving students hands-on training in science-related fields means more career opportunities.

"The National Science Foundation believes that science is best learned in context, and so by giving them a chance to apply what they've learned, we're hoping to make it more meaningful," said Glen Bull, a professor at the University of Virginia.

On Monday, students used a three-dimensional printer along with other equipment to make speakers.

"I feel like I can learn more from it too, that I get more information from it, and can actually feel how it's supposed to work," said Ellie Bright, UVA student.

UVA's Curry School of Education and the School of Engineering and Applied Science are partners in guiding the curriculum at the new lab.

The lab school was funded by a $300,000 planning grant from Governor Bob McDonnell.
