Albemarle Supervisors Moving to Strip Dumler of Board Duties
The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors is moving to strip Supervisor Chris Dumler of all his duties as a board member. In the wake of his sex crime conviction, they are also paving the way to replace Dumler, should he decide to step down.
In January, Dumler pleaded guilty to misdemeanor sexual battery. Under Virginia law, people convicted of a misdemeanor crime don't necessarily have to step down from the Board of Supervisors. And despite a wave of calls for his resignation, Dumler says he will not resign.
Supervisors say they are fed up with the distraction Dumler has become. Now they're trying to make him a lame duck. The board will hold a special session on Wednesday to address the situation and other topics. In a bipartisan move, supervisors are set to remove Dumler from the boards, committees and commissions he has been appointed to (read full list below).
The board could also limit public comment at regular meetings to 30 minutes, with more time to comment at the end of the meeting. While supervisors have been thinking about making this change for a while, it will likely be expedited due to problems at recent meetings.
Monday a protestor got verbal during a board work session. Every time Dumler would speak, she would yell words like "sexual predator" at him. Police were called in off their patrols to monitor the situation. The woman was not arrested.
The board will also establish a public process for appointing an interim supervisor.
"I don't know what the point of discussion is going to be, so I really can't comment on that. I really don't have any information right now. All the information I have, you have," said Dumler.
The special session will be held at the Albemarle County Office Building. It is open to the public and starts at 9:00 a.m.
