Madison County High School student Drew Kelliher is spending his senior year raising awareness of cystic fibrosis.
On Saturday, runners of all ages took part in a 5K race to support research for the chronic disease which affects the lungs and digestive track.
Kelliher says the race was inspired by a man he worked with at a gym who worked out to improve his breathing.
"I was interested in learning more about it so that's what I ended up doing my research project on and through that I learned so much that I just wanted to do something - there's a community service portion of the project - so I wanted to do something that would give back to that cause," he said.
Kelliher organized the race as part of a project through the Blue Ridge Virtual Governor's School.
The race raised more than $800 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
