Augusta County hopes a ground-breaking on Friday is one sign of an economic turnaround.
County officials joined developers to celebrate the beginning of the Towns on Imperial Project. Plans call for 100 townhouses just off Jefferson Highway near Fishersville.
Building construction in Augusta County was slower last year than any other time in the past four decades, but developers of the project are not worried.
"Housing needs aren't caused by the economy, they're caused by growth and population. Our population is still growing, so there's still a need for housing. Even though it may temporarily slow, the need is always there," said Frank Root, a developer.
Root says the Towns on Imperial development also takes advantage of the high-demand Fishersville area and selling prices around $160,000.
The first phase should be finished in June.
