East Rockingham HS Girls Basketball Wins State Championship Again
The East Rockingham HS girls basketball team beat Altavista 35-31 to win the Group A Division I state championship in Richmond Friday.
The victory gives the Eagles back-to-back state championships.
East Rockingham's Sarah Cameron led the Eagles with 13 points and 10 rebounds, including two free-throws with two seconds remaining.
Jessica Lam had 7 points and 6 rebounds for ERHS, while Meghan Nicholson added 8 points and 3 steals.
"I can't even describe it," says Nicholson. "I can hardly hold it together sitting here. Last night I had a rough night realizing today was our last day. To go out with that, that's the best way to go out."
"It's unbelievable," adds Lam. "It's so emotional going out there as a senior, and winning your last game. I wouldn't want to go out any other way."
East Rockingham held a 10-point lead going into the fourth quarter but Altavista came back to cut the lead to 32-31 with 3:21.
The Eagles (29-1) forced four turnovers over the final 2:40 to hold on, and the East Rockingham seniors finish their high school careers with their 100th win.
Head coach Paul Comer says, "It's just a tribute to these kids, and how much time they put in, and the work they've put in over the years. I couldn't be prouder of the 13 kids in that locker room right now."
