RSWA Debates Privatizing Ivy Material Utilization Center

Posted: Updated:

The future of the Ivy Material Utilization Center's topped talks for the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority Board Thursday. RSWA is debating a potential lease that would privatize the operation.

Currently Albemarle County is funding it since Charlottesville pulled out a few years ago.

Two issues right now include the term of the lease and the monthly rent.

"In order to do that on the Ivy site, since the solid waste authority owns the site, then there would need to be a lease between the authority and the county and that's a fundamental step from the county's perspective in considering what kind of options it wants to choose," said Tom Frederick, RSWA executive director.

The center operates a waste transfer station, a vegetative waste mulching operation and collection centers for white goods and tires.
