The Monticello High School girls basketball team had its season come to an end Tuesday afternoon with a 70-57 loss to Spotswood in the state semifinals in Richmond.

Monticello's Molly Shephard had 28 points and 9 rebounds in the loss.  Spotswood's Bailey Williams had 20 points, 11 assists, 8 rebounds, and 5 steals.   Monticello led 34-27 at halftime but Spotswood began the second half on a 14-0 run and never trailed after that.

Shephard said after the game, "I didn't want this to be our last game but I played like I had to leave everything on the court that's what I tried to do, unfortunately it didn't work out."

Bridgett Holleran said, "We made our goal, we hoped to go farther but that didn't work out. I'm just happy we gave all we've got and that's all you can ask for."

Spotswood guard Bailey Williams said, "I've been here before and I know what it feels like to come up short, two times, and I just didn't want to feel that again."

Monticello finishes the season with a 24-3 record, the best mark in school history.  Spotswood advances to face Brunswick the state finals on Saturday.
