Waynesboro police say one of their own officers is to blame crash that happened in January. Officer Shamica Spears was responding to a call for a domestic dispute when her cruiser collided with a Hyundai sedan at the corner of West Main Street and Arch Avenue on January 18. Spears was using her lights and siren at the time of the crash.
Police announced Tuesday morning that Spears has been charged with reckless driving.
"We can maneuver our vehicle through traffic like a normal driver couldn't do - and has no need to do. But we have to do that in a careful and cautious manner," said Captain Kelly Walker.
Waynesboro police won't say exactly why they believe 27-year-old Spears is at fault, but they said an internal review of the accident is still ongoing.
The driver of the Hyundai, 71-year-old Annette S. Powell of Crozet, suffered minor injuries.
