Valley Picks Book for Community Reading Program

Posted: Updated:

"One Book, One Community" has officially kicked off a month of festivities in the Shenandoah Valley. For the first time ever, this year's community read was picked by the people of Staunton, Waynesboro and Augusta County.

They chose "A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson. It tells of Bryson's adventures walking most of the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, a hike that brought him through Waynesboro.

"He does a lot of interesting stories about the towns that he goes through and the history and the trail and flora and fauna, and wild stories of people getting eaten by bears. Anyway, it is very entertaining and he's got a buddy with him who's even funnier than he is. So it's a great read," said Christiana Shields, director of nonprofit services for the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge, which sponsors the program.

Free copies of the book are available at libraries in Staunton, Waynesboro and Augusta.
