The Monticello girls basketball team advanced to the state semifinals with a 47-46 win over Poquoson Saturday in the AA Division 3 quarterfinals in Harrisonburg.
Freshman Kiana Scott hit a free throw with 0.8 seconds left to give the Mustangs the win in their first-ever state tournament appearance.
"It was faith," says Scott. "Just to have faith. I got the rebound, tried to hit the backboard, and I got fouled, and it's kind of pretty cool, being a freshman."
Sophomore guard Megan Comer says, "My teammates gave me good passes, and I was just able to catch it, and knock down shots, so it was a good night."
Senior guard Bridget Holleran says, "Oh God, to do this with this team is even more incredible. I wouldn't want to do this with any other team."
The Mustangs have been writing 70.4 on their hands all season.
The number is a reminder of the distance from Monticello to the Siegel Center in Richmond, which is the site of the state Final Four.
Senior guard Emily Larrabee says, "To finally reach 70.4, what we've been telling ourselves that we can do all year, and finally being able to prove it to ourselves, is a really good feeling."
Monticello will play Spotswood Tuesday at 11am in Richmond, after the Blazers blew out Patrick County 83-42 in their quarterfinal game.
Western Albemarle was unable to join the Mustangs and the Blazers in the state final four, after the Warriors' season came to an end with a 55-31 loss against Brunswick in Richmond.
The East Rockingham girls advanced in the A Division 1 Bracket, as the Eagles beat Charles City 70-25.
Senior Jessica Lam led East Rock with 18 points, and they'll play Castlewood in the semifinals Thursday at 11am in Richmond.
The Fort Defiance boys basketball team moves on to the state semifinals with a 59-50 win over Abingdon in the AA Division 3 quarterfinals.
The Indians will play Brunswick Tuesday at five o'clock in Richmond, after the Bulldogs topped Loudoun Valley 24-22.
The Spotswood boys will join them in the Final Four, after the Blazers topped Martinsville 61-44.
Spotswood will face Bruton Tuesday at 1pm.
William Monroe is matched up with Gate City in the A Division 2 semifinals Thursday at 9pm, after Gate City beat Graham 64-52 Saturday.
