Kevin Rice scored the game winner for Syracuse, handing the Cavalier men (4-1) their first loss of the season.
Mark Cockerton and Rob Emory each scored twice for UVA, while Matt White had a goal and an assist.
Virginia returns to action Tuesday, as the 'Hoos host Vermont at 7pm.
Casey Bocklet scored four goals to pace the UVA women, while Ashlee Warner added three.
The match against Maryland was the third game in the first four for Virginia (2-2) against a Top 10 opponent.
The Cavaliers beat #6 Loyola in their season opener, and lost at #2 Syracuse last week.
UVA will play another highly ranked team on Sunday, as the Wahoos host #10 Penn State at 1pm at Klockner Stadium.
