Virginia Snaps 8-Game Losing Skid to Blue Devils, Beats #3 Duke 73-68

Posted: Updated:

The UVa men's basketball team got a career high 36 points from Joe Harris, and beat #3 Duke 73-68 Thursday night at John Paul Jones Arena.

The victory was Virginia's first win over a Top-5 ranked opponent since UVa beat Duke in 2002.

Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski says, "Harris was fantastic, which we knew he would be. He's just one of the best players in the country. He had half their points. If you have a guy playing at that level, the other guys played well, but it brings everybody up."

"I'm just happy for the guys," says Virginia Head Coach Tony Bennett.  "I just want them to pursue quality and pursue excellence. Not get too high and not get too low"

Ironically the win comes on the 11-year anniversary of Virginia's win over Duke in 2002.

The Cavaliers' win Thursday snapped an eight game losing skid to the Blue Devils.

Virginia's last win against Duke was in 2007 at JPJA when Sean Singletary hit a game winning shot in the final seconds.

UVA led the entire game, and has won 16 straight games at John Paul Jones Arena.

Akil Mitchell had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Virginia, while Seth Curry led Duke with 28 points in the loss.

Virginia improves to 10-5 in the ACC, and earns a signature win in their quest to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Duke falls to 11-4.

Virginia is in a tie with North Carolina for third place in the ACC.

The top four teams in the conference earn a bye for the first round of the ACC Tournament.

The Cavaliers improve to 20-8 overall, and play at Boston College Sunday afternoon.
