Cville Councilor Urges McDonnell to Veto ‘Hybrid Tax’

Posted: Updated:

Charlottesville City Council will debate a controversial fee for alternative fuel vehicles when it meets on Monday.

Councilor Dave Norris' resolution opposes what critics are calling a "hybrid tax," the $100 annual fee levied against alternative fuel vehicle owners.

It's a small part of the $3.5 billion transportation funding plan approved last week in Richmond. But it's one Norris says unfairly targets environmental awareness.

"It's the wrong direction for us to go in. We want to be reducing air pollution, we want to be promoting fuel efficiency; this measure does the exact opposite," Norris said.

Supporters say the fee levels the playing field for alternative fuel vehicle owners, who pay less in gas taxes.

An online petition urging the governor to veto the fee now has more than 4,000 signatures.
